FREDERIKA is a women’s fashion label based in Jakarta, Indonesia, formerly known as EUREKA. The brand was established in 2019 and continues the spirit of EUREKA by finding new discoveries in design. FREDERIKA explores different possibilities in traditional batik-making and uses the traditional wax-resist dyeing process while adding unique inspiration for each collection’s motifs. FREDERIKA designs ready-to-wear pieces that are sophisticated, functional, and have a focus on details. The collections are for individuals who are daring, feminine, appreciate the art of the process, and love handmade details.
Hi Erika! Could you tell us more about how you got started in fashion, and what inspired you to start your own fashion brand?
Erika: Complete story of these would take a very long time! I would say my interest in fashion grows during Junior High School, when I am exposed to a fashion design extracurricular. During my high school times, I was quite set on having Fashion Design as my future career.
FREDERIKA has been around since early 2019. What’s your proudest moment while building the brand so far?
Erika: I think it would be when organizations and institutions recognize my creation. It feels like it is a recognition from the existing people in the industry.
What makes FREDERIKA different from the other brands?
Erika: FREDERIKA creates handmade textiles with a contemporary touch. Our motifs are created in conjunction with our collection story, while maintaining handmade textile making methods from: hand-drawn batik, hand-stamped batik and hand-drawn textiles.
Give us a sneak peek into your typical design process as you start a new collection!
Erika: Inspiration usually comes from my recent holidays or daily activities, then I would work in available resources and textiles in my place.
Who are your personal style muses when you design for FREDERIKA? Where else do you draw fashion/style inspiration from?
Erika: I love creators such as Chriselle Lim. She’s been a lifelong style inspiration for me.
If you could describe the aesthetic of FREDERIKA’s pieces with 3 adjectives, what would they be?
Erika: Contemporary, Versatile, Preservation.
What is one piece in your collections that you hold closest to your heart? Is there a story behind it?
Erika: Kharisma Dress! It was created back in 2018 (I would say the collection is FREDERIKA’s starting point back then when the brand name was still EUREKA). I remember I explored a lot on drawstrings back then, and I loved that this dress is very much adjustable in quite a lot of women’s body size.
